High Bar Set for Pot Plantations
The state’s commercial marijuana growers will be held to some of the most stringent standards for energy use in the country when Illinois becomes the 11th US state to permit recreational use on January 1st. Caveats on water conservation also fall under the Marijuana Regulation and Tax Act, signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in June. Nearly two dozen cultivation centers supply the state’s 55 medical dispensaries, five of which received licenses to service recreational users last week.
The act’s rules for energy consumption are modeled on those in Massachusetts and demand that cultivators use only approved lighting. They must recycle wastewater and limit runoff. Under terms of the Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Programs Act, cardholding residents can legally grow grass at home.
