Bring Back the Death Penalty?
Illinois Rep. David McSweeney thinks reinstatement’s worth pursuing. Prompted by recent mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, the Barrington Hills Republican told reporters that he intends to sponsor a bill to restore capital punishment as a vehicle for curbing violent crime in the Windy City. Almost 50 Chicagoans were killed or injured by gunfire the weekend following attacks that killed 32 in the two states earlier this month.
Illinois did away with the death penalty in 2011. Chicago was named America’s mass-shooting capital in 2015, but the city’s homicide rate has fallen by a third in recent years. Former Gov. Bruce Rauner, also a Republican, moved to have mass shootings and the killing of cops classed as capital crimes but the proposal died in a legislative committee as his term ended in 2018.
