A Clean Slate for Cannabis Offenders in Cook County
Among the many with a Chicago pot bust? If so, your name could be cleared when Illinois grants permission for recreational marijuana use in January. Under a plan put forward by State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, records in Cook County will be wiped clean of hundreds of thousands of petty convictions when it becomes legal to light up and chow down on leaf, concentrates and edibles.
Foxx is letting dealers off the hook, too. She wants to see the records of those convicted of possessing as much as 500 grams of pot expunged on January 1st, when Illinois residents then can possess as much as 30 grams of leaf cannabis without breaking the law. Foxx also is seeking to expand diversion programs that let users and sellers avoid court.
